2. Information about the collection of personal data
2.1 Collection of personal data when visiting our website
When visiting the Website and web database DARIA, the browser used automatically transmits data that is stored in a log file. GIZ itself only processes the data that is technically required to display the website correctly and to ensure its stability and security.
Among other things, it is stored for each access the page viewed, the IP address of the accessing device, the page from which the user was redirected, as well as the date and time of the access. A detailed list of stored data can be found here.

The data in the log file is deleted after 1 day.
Further information on the storage and transfer of data:
GIZ is obliged to store data beyond the time of the visit in order to ensure protection against attacks on the GIZ’s internet infrastructure and the communications technology of the Federal Government (legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (e) GDPR in conjunction with Section 5 BSI Act). In the event of attacks on communications technology, this data is analyzed and used to initiate legal and criminal prosecution.
Data logged when accessing the GIZ's website is only transmitted to third parties if there is a legal obligation to do so or if the transmission is necessary for legal or criminal prosecution in the event of attacks on the Federal Government's communications technology. Data will not be passed on in any other cases. This data is not merged with other data sources at GIZ.
2.2 Cookies
When you visit our website and the web-database, small text files, so-called cookies, are stored on your computer. They are used to make the online presence more user-friendly and effective overall Cookies cannot run programs or infect your computer with viruses.
The GIZ website uses cookies that are automatically deleted as soon as the browser in which the page is displayed is closed (so-called temporary cookies or session cookies). This type of cookie makes it possible to assign different requests from a browser to a session and to recognize the browser when you visit the website again (session ID).

Information on opting out
Users who do not agree with the completely anonymous storage and evaluation of the data from their visit can opt out of the storage and use of the data at any time with a click of the mouse.

For this purpose, what is known as an opt-out cookie is stored on the device, preventing user data from being collected when the user visits the website in question. In order for the opt-out to take effect, the cookie must be stored on every device used. As the cookie is stored in specific browsers (programs for internet access), the cookie must be stored in each browser used on each device (e.g. Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Mozilla Firefox).
When all cookies on a device are deleted, the opt-out cookie is also deleted and must be reactivated.
3. Processing of personal data when contacting us
When users contact us, the data provided will be processed in order to be able to respond to the enquiry. The following contact options are available:

3.1 Contact form
On our website/database, a form offers the possibility to contact us electronically. When using the contact form, personal data such as name, e-mail address, phone number and country, as well as any information provided by the e-mail are being processed. Your postal address and other personal data provided in the request will be processed. The processing is carried out on the basis of consent in accordance with Art. 6 para. 1 lit. a GDPR and for the purpose of processing your request.
By activating the checkbox and submitting the contact form, the user agrees to the transmission and storage of his/her personal data. Filling out the contact form can be cancelled at any time. The data will only be transmitted by submitting the form.
The data is transmitted to GIZ via an SSL-encrypted connection.
3.2 Contact by e-mail
Alternatively, it is possible to contact GIZ via the e-mail addresses provided. In this case, at least the email address but also any other personal user data transmitted with the email (e.g. family and given name, address) as well as the information contained in the email are stored solely for the purpose of contacting the user and processing the request.
The legal basis for the processing of data transmitted in the course of sending an e-mail is Art. 6 (1) e GDPR.
3.3 Contact by telephone
If you contact us by telephone, personal data will be processed to the extent necessary in order to handle your request.
The legal basis for the processing of data transmitted in the course of a telephone call is Art. 6 para. 1 lit. e GDPR.
4. Processing of personal data in connection with DARIA database use
Information on data processing in accordance with Article 13 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (‘data privacy statement’)
This data privacy statement refers to the processing of data within the programme ‘Centres for Migration and Development’ (ZME). GIZ has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of the Federal Republic of Germany to implement the programme. The objective of ZME is to enable partner structures to support people engaging in regular migration for work and training purposes, voluntary return and sustainable reintegration as well as regional migration in a target group-specific and sustainable manner. Regular migration for work or training purposes offers considerable potential for development in the countries of origin and destination and for migrants themselves.
GIZ takes the protection of personal data very seriously. This document provides information about how your personal data are processed.
4.1 Contact data of the data controller

4.2 Collecting your data
We process your personal data as follows:
- contact data (residential address, e-mail-address, phone numbers)
- personal data (full name, gender, age, marital status, nationality, location, education, number of dependents, living conditions, possible impairments)
- personal data contained in your CV
- personal data in relation to regular migration, regional migration as well as voluntary return and sustainable reintegration
4.3 Purpose of data processing and legal basis
Purposes in the public interest or to perform a task assigned to GIZ (Article 6 (1) lit e GDPR)
We process personal data for the following purpose(s):
- evaluation & monitoring
- needs identification and matching with services and establishing contact with service providers related to training measures, employment promotion activities, counselling, and psychosocial support
Processing of your personal data is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest.
4.4 Disclosure to third parties
Only if strictly necessary for the purpose of providing you with the relevant services, we pass the required personal data to the relevant implementation partner or service providers, who are either by contract or law required to adequately ensure data protection compliance.
Moreover, when strictly necessary for the purpose of evaluation & monitoring, we forward your name and contact details to relevant third parties who are either by contract or law required to adequately ensure data protection compliance.
4.5 Transfer of data to a third country
As a Federal German enterprise, GIZ is bound by the rules of European data protection law, especially those of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Thus, when GIZ transfers data to a local service provider or implementation partner which isn’t based in the European Union or the European Economic Area, it is considered a transfer of data to a third country.
In ZME certain personal data (name and contact details) are transmitted to third countries for the purpose of monitoring purposes and tracer studies by local data processors.
Only if strictly necessary for the purpose of providing you with the relevant services, we pass the required personal data to the relevant implementation partner or service providers, who might be located in the respective implementation country.
When transmitting data to third countries, suitable safeguards are applied to ensure an adequate level of data protection (Article 44 et seq GDPR). The legal basis for the transfer of data to a third country are important reasons of public interest (Article 49 (1) lit d). We ensure that the transfer is limited to what is strictly necessary for the purpose and your interest and that the relevant third party is capable of providing an adequate level of data protection either by contract or law.
However, some risks might not be ruled out at present in connection with the aforementioned transfer and could include the following in particular:
- You may not be able to effectively assert or enforce your rights as a data subject vis-à-vis the data recipient.
- It cannot be completely ruled out that data may be processed incorrectly because the technical and organisational measures taken by the data recipient to protect personal data do not fully meet the quantitative and qualitative requirements of the GDPR.
- Your personal data could possibly be passed on by the data recipient to other third parties for purposes other than the actual purpose of fulfilling the order.
4.6 Retention and erasure of your data
Your personal data will be erased after the completion of the programme (May 31st, 2027) or as necessary to comply with statutory retention periods. You could also delete your personal data from DARIA whenever you wish to.
4.7 Technical and organisational measures to protect your data
GIZ uses appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect data against unintended or deliberate falsification, destruction, loss or access by unauthorised persons. These measures are updated accordingly based on technical developments and adapted continuously in line with the given risks.
5. Your rights
In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right
- to obtain information about your data stored by us (Article 15 GDPR)
- to have your data stored by us rectified (Article 16 GDPR)
- to have your data stored by us erased or you erase yourself on DARIA (Article 17 GDPR)
- to obtain restriction of processing of your data stored by us (Article 18 GDPR)
- to object to the storage of your data if they are processed on the basis of Article 6(1)(1)(f) and (e), GDPR (Article 21 GDPR)
- to receive data that concern you in a commonly used and machine-readable format from the controller such that they can be potentially transmitted to another controller (right to data portability, Article 20 GDPR).

You also have the right in accordance with Article 77 GDPR to lodge a complaint with the competent data protection supervisory authority. The competent authority for GIZ is the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI).
